Tsuwano is a town rich in historical atmosphere, nurtured by 700 years of history. The ruins of Tsuwano Castle recall the heroic figure of the Warring States period, carp swim in the canal where irises bloom, and passing through the red torii gate leads to Taikodani Inari Shrine, one of Japan's five great Inari shrines, which stands as if watching over Tsuwano. A town that has preserved this type of scenery and environment has come to be known as "Little Kyoto of Sanin." During the Edo period, it was a small domain with a stipend of only 43,000 koku, but during the late Edo period it produced many great people, including many restoration patriots, the philosopher Nishi Amane, and the literary master Mori Ogai. This town, where time flows slowly, continues to maintain its tranquil atmosphere as a "Japanese hometown."
